Polishing, Tinkering, Purging

May 28, 2011

This year we have oodles of plans to take Godchecker into new and invigorating dimensions. (Did someone say the word ‘app’?)

To help make this all happen, we’ve been extraordinarily busy behind the scenes tinkering and polishing the Holy Code. You’ll notice a few tweaks here and there – hopefully nice ones that don’t break your browser into little pieces. Most importantly of all we are actively updating the Database of All Known Gods, correcting mistakes, fixing glitches and purging unsightly pustules wherever we find them.

To get things going, we’ve just updated the entire African Mythology section. Several erroneous entries have been zapped and many little errors have been fixed. Work continues, so if you find any mistakes please let us know.

And don’t forget you can give us instant feedback via Twitter or Facebook.

The Godchecker Technical Kludge Department is pleased to announce the relaunch of our official Twitter feed.

Our boffins have been working hard behind the scenes without the benefit of sleep, cake or any formal training in health and safety to bring your your daily Godfix. Head over to http://twitter.com/Godchecker.

Also in the pipeline is a Facebook feed. If you are interested in such a thing, let us know!

Godchecker the Third

June 21, 2010

Today, on the very pinnacle of the Summer Solstice, we unleash the brand new Godchecker site on an unsuspecting interweb.

This is the third major version of Godchecker since we began back in 1999. The first version was embarrassingly primitive, but the second was quite clever for its time, even sporting pseudo Web 2.0 features – before Web 2.0 was even invented.

It’s been our aim to revamp the site for a while. A lot has changed since the last upgrade. Gone are the days of browser wars and incompatibility hell; now there are such things as widescreen monitors, iPads and CSS3. What a wonderful thing is technology. We thank all the Gods for inventing it.

Please let us know what you think of the new look site. We will be adding more bits and pieces over the next few weeks, so your feedback will really help us. If there’s anything you love or hate, let us know!

News from Godchecker HQ

June 11, 2010

Just to keep our loyal acolytes in the loop, here’s a quick rundown of the freshest Godchecker news.

  • After much hectic editorial poking and prodding, The Book of the Gods is finished, checked, stamped and approved. The artwork is currently in India being scrutinised by a crack team of expert printers and we expect an exciting parcel to arrive some time in September. Godchecker HQ sends out a large thank-you to Robin Harries of The History Press and his team for their sterling work during the editorial and design process.
  • We are hoping to give everyone a sneak preview of the amazingly gorgeous cover soon. Maybe even a sample page or two. We are very very very pleased with it. The Gods have indeed been smiling upon us.
  • Godchecker Marketing Dept are planning and plotting ideas for the book launch. A party seems inevitable. Maybe two. Where and when? Beer or wine? Casual dress or togas? We’ll let you know.
  • Never a man to rest on his laurels (for that is extremely uncomfortable), the magnificent Chas Saunders is once again delving into pubs and real ale for his Pubology project. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.
  • Meanwhile, behind the scenes on Godchecker.com, the technical coding team lead by Dr Kludge have been working insanely on a brand new version of the site. Godchecker Mk III will be unveiled very soon!
  • Many of our loyal and wonderful readers have discovered the Official Godchecker Twitter where the quirkiest of our many quirks are tweeted for your viewing pleasure. Please help us to help the Gods and spread the word!

That’s all for now. More very soon!

Odds, Sods and Gods

New ‘modern’ pantheon in the pipeline

By extraordinarily popular request – via email, twitter and clay tablet hurled through our windows on a regular basis – we are planning to add a new pantheon to Godchecker.

This pantheon will include Gods, Goddesses and spiritual beings of the modern world. Finally we will have a suitable home in our Holy Database for the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the Invisible Pink Unicorn, Athe (God of Atheists), JR “Bob” Dobbs , Tolkien and Cthulu entities and maybe even some Twitter Gods of our acquaintance.

This is probably the most exciting thing to happen to Godchecker since yesterday. We are temporarily calling this new pantheon ‘Goddities’. Feedback most welcome.

If our loyal followers have any suggestions for modern, fictional or otherwise apocryphal Gods we can include, please feel free to drop us a suggestion in the comments, or tweet us.

The Gods get blogged

May 9, 2010

By popular demand — and because the Gods told us to — Godchecker is now available in handy pocket-size blog format.

This will give a greater opportunity for us to dazzle our loyal followers and acolytes with Godly snippets straight from the Holy Snail’s orifice. Updates, projects, plans and sneak previews will all be displayed herein for your glorious gratification. Probably. Just as long as our Kludgemeister figures out which button to press…

GODFLASH

July 30, 2005

Utterly important news

We have now reached the stage where e-mails are coming in vaster quantities faster than ever before – and although we have bought a splendidly carved snake stick to shake at them, this does not appear to be the answer.

So we are thinking of re-instating GODFLASH on a sort of Godblog Basis to deal with questions, which we hope will deal with many similar queries – as individual answers to all e-mails could now take decades.

Our first and foremost priority is now our programming progress. We have cunning plans for a whole new Regional Section. This will require a total revamp of our Holy Database, as the Gods will have to pass through the Godport at the End of the Universe. They don’t really go for passports and the idea of I.D. cards imposed by mortals would not be tolerated. What we do need to know is where they have come from so they are in the correct check-out queue.

This is always so long and winding due to the tiresome technical configurations where all information has to be turned into dots and spibble, every one spot-on or the whole system can crash. Our Database is a cosmic creation of excruciating complexity. Our Guru has to be cosseted and comforted, and can only work in the dark with a damp cloth held to his forehead by a nymph and dish of dry roasted peanuts within reach. There must also be unlimited supplies of black coffee of an almost unobtainable blend from far away places. On the door before it is nailed shut is the legend ‘Don’t Bother to Knock – Just Go Away!’

YES!!! Gods from the following areas are on STANDBY. They ARE in our Godport Archives and THEY WILL make an appearance on our Database in due course. Everything conspires to drive them off course, but nevertheless the following areas ARE in the programming pipeline and we cannot make it happen any faster. INDIA. INDONESIA. JAPAN. ROMAN & ETRUSCAN. SLAVIC. TIBET. WEST INDIES. SOUTH AMERICA.

There are also plans and work in progress to include Saints, Angels and Gods in Fiction, H.P. Lovecraft, Science fiction, Fantasy etc.

To avoid being sidetracked, please note we are no longer going out of our way to supply names and lists of suitable Gods for Role Playing Games, Businesses, Pets, Names for Children or anything else. This will save of lot of people all the trouble of never bothering to say thank you, and will cut down on e-mails all round.

Also at this stage we can no longer supply free pics. We are hoping to instigate a picture library, but this needs a lot of arduous planning and research.

Last but not least we are not funded by anything or anybody. Chance would be a fine thing. All donations (greatly appreciated and blessings to those who have) and Godshop commission etc. is swallowed whole to help alleviate our bandwidth costs and expenses.

Our very best Godly Blessings to you all wherever you may be.
